An ancient and modern garden
For a manor house
in Oxfordshire
This Norman manor house was dominated by car parking right in
front of the house, we moved the cars away and created a 'front
court' so that the house is completely framed by garden. A line of
pleached crab apples make a visual division between the drive and
the garden, you approach the house by walking under them. The
limestone chipping surface is planted with low box hedges which
form a criss cross pattern - a contemporary version of a knot
garden- which is peppered with aromatic lavenders and sages. Oxeye
daisies float above the line of the hedges and in between the
sculptural, clipped topiary shapes that punctuate the knot.
