A garden for a mill house

A handsome former mill, this house was surrounded by a sea of gravel when we arrived, and still had an almost industrial feel. The façade of the building is now covered in roses and in front of this we created a parterre with pyramid topiary yews, box edged beds filled with lavender and alliums and a crisp lawn to lead you to the main door. The formality of this area is softened by three pollarded limes that bracket one of the outer corners, and the plants that are encouraged to self-seed in the limestone chippings. At the back of the house, lawn levels were lowered and an area excavated to give a dining terrace. Around the terrace undulating 'cloud' box hedging provides a green backdrop and a structure for the foxgloves, herbs and roses.
