Shrubs and Trees

In planting terms the fixed points of the garden are the shrubs and trees.  On this course we include planting them in rows or as hedges, or clipping them as topiary. These main players give volume and height and define the space for other garden elements.  Some trees and shrubs perform their job quietly as a back-drop to other plants whilst others are show stoppers in their own right. Think of the magnolias that burst open in spring and make a bold show of full-bodied flowers - or choose a variety that will lift the garden with an autumn flush.

Arne will talk about where you can plant shrubs like Philladelphus 'Belle Etoile' for gorgeous scent or a lilac whose branches can be cut in armfuls for the house. We will also discuss smaller shrubs that can be incorporated in herbaceous beds to give them more permanent structure. On a larger scale, Arne will talk about choosing appropriate large trees for within and on the boundary of the garden - perhaps the quiet majesty of beech or the lush green leafiness of a walnut tree.
