Land Art and Level Changes

No matter how big or small a garden, careful consideration of how to form changes of levels can make a big impact on the space.  By taking it a step further, the banks, mounds and slopes within the garden can become a form of land art.  Using photographs and the example of the earth works at Allt-y-bela, Arne will illustrate his ideas on adding elements such as undulating banks of close cropped turf which catch the evening light to stunning effect, or sharply cut mounds which contrast with the softer contours of a meadow or orchard. If not in earth, stone can be carved, or steps can be built which create pattern and sculptural form within even the smallest garden. Arne will also talk about other ways of dealing with levels - from the use of terraces and banks, to the impact of raising or lowering a lawn by just a few inches.
